Officially identified for the first time in 1783, zircon — or zirconium silicate — had already been mentioned in Hindu and Judeo-Christian mythology! Thanks to a combination of unique characteristics such as hard wearing, whiteness, opacity, temperature stability, corrosion resistance and durability, Grande Côte Opérations (GCO) zircon is used in ceramic tiles, refractory and abrasive materials, as well as in jewelry. Due to its low thermal expansion and high melting point, zircon is also used to produce industrial molds and refractory bricks for steel and glass production.
